Petitioning for Family-Based Immigration
If you live in another country and want to come live permanently in the U.S., you must first be petitioned by a relative who is a U.S. citizen or green-card holder. The petitioner must be at least 21 years old.
Eligible parties can petition under the following two visa categories:
Immediate Relative: For beneficiaries who have close family relationships with U.S. citizens. This can be a spouse, child, or parent.

Fiance Visa: If you are marrying a foreigner, you may apply for a K-1 Fiance visa.

Family Preference: For beneficiaries with specific and distant family relationships with a U.S. citizen. Beneficiaries with certain relationships with green-card holders can also be petitioned under this category.
